Can you remember where you went on your first family vacation? How about your 3rd, 4th or 5th? Do you remember the day that you graduated high school or college? I know I can. They were all life experiences that led to very treasured memories. Now, can you remember what you got for Christmas when you were 12 years old? For some, you probably can, but I bet it was harder to recall than your favorite concert was! In my humble opinion, experiences are so much better than things because good experiences lead to cherished lifelong memories.
My wife and I are about to embark on one of life’s greatest experiences as we welcome our first born, Ethan, into this world. Parenthood is a brand new adventure and one that is going to be choc full of memories for us both. But memory is not something that I (the proud papa) am particularly good at. I have a really bad memory brought on by medical reasons, and I am scared to death that I won’t be able to remember something that Ethan does next year, 10 years from now. My wife would be able to recall the story of his first steps with ease, perhaps 50 years from now. Me on the other hand? My response would be, “he started walking when he was 10 months.” I would probably not remember the details with the clarity that other people could.
Ethan is not here yet, but I know that he loves us. When he arrives approx. 9 weeks from now he will know that we love him too. But what about 30 years from now, when he is having a son of his own and he comes to me for advice? Will I be able to offer it, or will my answer be “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember?” That is why I am starting this website. I want to document his new adventure of life, and our new adventure of parenthood. I hope this blog serves as both a memory deposit for me, and a journal of sorts for new parents like us who care to follow along with us. My wife and I have no idea what we are doing, but we can’t wait to figure it out!!
